Blake Lively Thinks She’s the “Luckiest Girl Around"

Fashion’s love affair with Gossip Girl star Blake Lively just ascended to another level. Karl Lagerfeld has tapped Ms. Vanderwoodsen to be Chanel‘s Purse Ambassador. Next stop, Chancellor of Boleros?

When Uncle Karl calls you an “American dream girl”; Anna Wintour throws you on two Vogue covers and a special supplemental issue; and your hair has joined the iconic locks of “the Rachel” and “the Farrah,” you’re officially more than just the “luckiest girl around.”

You’re the most envied girl on the whole f-ing planet.

Yet somehow all this acclaim has not gone to Lively’s pretty little head. She admits she has been a fan of the iconic brand since she was a child and her love for Chanel is downright adorable:

“I will always feel it’s more than just a purse. It’s a quilted case full of lipstick, love letters and the dreams and possibilities that I have always felt every time I see that beautiful ‘CC.’?”

Fine. You win, Blake. You’re awesome. Now get back to filming Gossip Girl so I have something to do on Monday nights.

What’s Black & White and Spotted All Over?

Givenchy‘s Spring/Summer 2011 ad campaign, shot by Mert Alas and Macrus Piggot that’s what. The striking images feature creative director Ricardo Tisci‘s love of androgyny and a generous helping of leopard prints. More pics after the jump!

The campaign stars Givenchy regulars Mariacarla Boscono, Iris Strubegger, Natasha Poly, Daphne Groeneveld along with Jonathan Marquez, Pablo Otero and current It boy, Stephen Thompson.
Noticeably absent, however, is Tisci muse Lea T. I miss that stunning tranny, but these ads are already an early contender for my favorite campaign this year.

A Classy New Year’s with JWOWW

Remember when Jenni “JWOWW” Farley was a lady for a quick second? Well she certainly turned up the trash factor for her New Year’s Eve outfit: pasties and a chain (would one even call that a) shirt. However, MTV, being a family network, asked her to tone it down with a sensible blazer.

A source tells Us Weekly:

“JWoww wanted to wear just her chains and pasties without her blazer for the MTV New Year’s Eve special… to abide by MTV’s Standards & Practices.”

Since when has MTV been concerned about standards? This coming from the network that introduced the world to smoosh rooms and grenade-jumping?

It’s New Year’s Eve, for Snooki’s sake; a time when modesty and decorum are crushed up, snorted, sexually harassed and thrown out the window.

If JWOWW wants to look like a moderately-priced hooker, let her! This is America, dammit!

American Eagle & Celebrity Friends Help Haiti Heal

American Eagle Outfitters has recently announced their partnership with Concern Worldwide US to raise funds for the rebuilding and support of schools in Haiti. Leading up to the one year anniversary of the January 12th earthquake, The Edge, Ryan Seacrest, Sean Paul, Joaquin Phoenix, Mark Ruffalo, Katharine McPhee, & Garcelle Beauvais to name a few are helping to spread the word to buy and wear the limited-edition, AE-designed “Help Haiti Heal” T-shirts.

Beginning yesterday, limited-edition, AE-designed “Help Haiti Heal” T-shirts are being sold in more than 900 American Eagle Outfitters stores throughout the U.S., and worldwide at www.ae.com/haiti. The T-shirts were made in Haiti, by Haitians, to mark the first anniversary of the earthquake and raise awareness about the continuing need to help Haiti heal. The entire purchase price of US $15.50 will be donated to Concern Worldwide’s education program in Haiti, with the potential to raise as much as US $1 million.

The proceeds raised from the sale of the Help Haiti Heal t-shirts will: rebuild and repair two schools that were destroyed during the earthquake, provide 1,000 earthquake-affected children with access to primary education, equip the two schools with classroom furniture (desks, chairs), install clean water systems, latrines and sanitation at the two schools and ensure that the most vulnerable children in the communities receive a primary education.

This is a really great cause because Haiti has not fully recovered from the tragedy that happened almost a year ago and it is fantastic that brands like American Eagle are helping to support and raise awareness about Haiti even after most people have forgotten about it.

You can purchase one of these shirts from AE.com

Golden Globes Beauty

Johansson, Portman, Jolie, Bieber! Everyone who’s anyone turned out for the 68th annual Golden Globe Awards last night and while the fashion was fierce, the beauty offered up even more points for discussion. Here, we asked Frédéric Fekkai’s national creative director Fabrice Gili and celebrity makeup artist (and Marchesa designers Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig favorite) Talia Shobrook to break down the ten most notable hair and makeup looks from the show. On the list: Sandra’s bangs (clip-ons, or no?), Justin’s bronzer abuse, and all things January Jones—the lipstick and that blond wave, specifically. As for how she pulled off the gravity-defying feat of keeping herself bound inside the bodice of that Versace gown, your guess is as good as ours. Via

What To Wear When You’re Expecting A Baby And A Gold Statue

The Golden Globes are this Sunday and the Oscars will be here in a flash, which means the red-carpet speculation has begun in earnest at Style.com’s offices. From what we’ve witnessed at our pre-fall appointments, the A-lister every designer is angling to dress seems to be Best Actress nom—and expectant mom—Natalie Portman. How else to account for the return of the empire waist, as seen on Valentino’s long and lacy black gown (left)?

We can’t say for certain that Marion Cotillard, Jennifer Connelly, or Penélope Cruz will be showing off their baby bumps in the coming weeks, but if they do, body-skimming halter gowns from Derek Lam and Reem Acra are two flattering and comfortable options. On the other hand, a bit of flash is always welcome, and Peter Dundas’ neo-hippie number for Emilio Pucci would look great on a wild child with child—Kate Hudson, we’re talking to you.

TOKYO FASHION

There were some very distinct fashion trends for young women in Tokyo this Spring. Denim jackets and skirts - Never worn together, but a short denim jacket would be worn over a dress or t-shirt with pants in a wide range of lengths from the very short to full length in either army green or camouflage.
Below the knee length boots were very common, worn with shorts or dresses, but with bare legs. Stocking socks were worn with the boots, more frequently showing than hidden at the top. The styles of boots varied greatly, as I don't think I ever saw any the same.

Many boots were a cowboy style, but with a high pointed heel. Others had patterns on the side or fancy laces. Black was not a common color.

Gothic Lolita Japan

Gothic Lolita was influenced and popularised by the imagery of more feminine Visual Kei (or "visual rock") bands. Visual Kei is a Japanese form of rock music defined by bands featuring performers in elaborate costumes but whose musical style varies. Mana, the cross dressing former leader and guitarist of the Visual Kei band Malice Mizer is widely credited for having helped popularise Gothic Lolita. He coined the terms "Elegant Gothic Lolita" (EGL) and "Elegant Gothic Aristocrat" (EGA) to describe the style of his own fashion label Moi-même-Moitié, which was founded in 1999 and quickly established itself as one of the most coveted brands of the Gothic Lolita scene.

Gothic Lolita - The style

Gothic Lolita style is usually a combination of black and white, often black with white lace and typically decorated with ribbons and lace trims. Skirts are knee length and may have a crinoline or petticoat to add volume. As in mainstream Japanese fashion, over-knee socks or stockings are extremely popular. Black fishnet stockings and white or black tights are also common. Shoes or boots with high heels - though not usually stiletto heels - such as Mary Janes, complete the look. Frilly, ruffled or lace-trimmed Victorian blouses are also popular especially with "EGL" types, who may also favour long skirts and jackets rather than the overtly "childish" designs of typical gothloli's. Apart from the occasional shortness of skirts, designs are usually modest, sometimes with long lace-capped sleeves.

Some additions may include an Alice in Wonderland-style apron, tiny top hats, parasols, lace gloves, and lace headpieces. Mostly black or white, headgear might consist of a headband with ruffles, ribbons, lace or bows. Sometimes even bonnets are worn. Hair may be curled to complete the porcelain doll look. The naturally dark Japanese hair color may be lightened to blonde or kept black. Some may choose to wear wigs as well.

Makeup is used sparingly and is seen more often with EGL styles than with other gothloli styles. Black eyeliner is typical. A pale complexion is preferred, so white foundation might be used. Red or black lipstick is seen but lighter makeup is the rule.

Goken Lolita outfits may be accessorized with other props like conspicuous pocketbooks, hatboxes, handbags and other bags, sometimes in the shape of bats, coffins, and crucifixes. Teddy bears and other stuffed animals are also common, and some brands make special "goken" teddy bears out of black leather or PVC. Also, many Goken Lolita own Super Dollfies and carry them around.

"Lolita"

Although "Lolita" is a reference to Vladimir Nabokov's famous novel, and GothLoli is often worn by teens, most followers of the style do not consider it overtly sexual. Adherents present themselves as Victorian children or baby dolls and prefer to look "cute" rather than "sexy". Many Lolitas claim that the term 'lolita' doesn't necessarily have anything to do with sex at all. The usage of the word may also be considered wasei-eigo.

Japanese culture places a higher value upon extremely youthful appearance and behaviour than Western, and some adult women buy large amounts of products, such as Hello Kitty goods, that are typically marketed only to children in the West. GothLoli is perhaps a more visible extension of this phenomenon.

Goth Loli culture

In Japan it is mass-marketed and has wide visibility particularly in the streets of Tokyo and Osaka, on television, in manga (see Paradise Kiss by Ai Yazawa for an example of gothloli inspired manga) and computer games. Outside of Japan it is still a fringe fashion although it has slowly begun to spread to other countries. Gothic Lolita, along with Cosplay and other Japanese cultural phenomena, can sometimes be seen at concerts and anime conventions throughout Europe and the United States. The style has not yet been mass marketed outside of Japan. However, there are plenty of dedicated fans filling the gap. Gothic Lolita magazines are widely available for purchase on the internet and at Japanese bookstores, which also deal in anime and manga. Adherents in Europe and the United States often sew their own homemade Gothic Lolita outfits, sometimes offering them for sale to make up for the difficulty of acquiring them from Japan.

Gothic Lolita in the West

Many Goth girls in the west, have borrowed from the Japanese goth loli style, and have created a market for this style of clothing (particulary in online auctions). Americas Tokyopop recently comissioned, along with performer Courtney Love (who is not goth/goth loli herself, but is a former Japanese resident) an original manga in the goth loli style, called Princess Ai. This was the first (at least publicised) Japan/West goth loli collaboration.

Gothic & Lolita Bible

One magazine in particular, the irregularly published Gothic & Lolita Bible, has played an instrumental role in promoting and standardizing the style. The 100+ page magazine includes fashion tips, photos, sewing patterns, catalog descriptions, decorating ideas, and even recipes.

Gothic Lolita - Shopping

Currently the heart of the Gothic Lolita subculture, at least commercially, is the Marui Young department store in Shinjuku, after its predecessor Marui One closed at the end of August 2004. This large youth-fashion oriented department store has 4 floors entirely devoted to Gothloli and related fashions.

Crossover with Goth

"Gothloli" as a fashion is not as strongly associated with a particular style of music or outside interests as goth, and individual followers of Gothloli fashion may listen to a wide variety of music including regular Japanese pop.

In Japan, Goth is a very minor subculture with few followers, partly because the emphasis upon visual identity in Japanese youth culture makes other factors such as music and literature less important signifiers and perhaps partly because Christianity and Germanic culture are not integral parts of society. In Japan, people who have heard the term "Goth" usually assume that it refers to "Gothic Lolita", except for the Goths themselves, who strongly emphasize the differences. (Likewise, some western observers incorrectly assume that "Gothloli" is the Japanese version of "Goth".)

However, due to the popularity of Gothloli from around 2001–2004 and its continued acceptance by many young girls, Goth nightclubs and events increasingly include Gothic Lolita elements in order to attract more customers. Thus many Japanese "Goth Clubs" will also feature a guest DJ playing J-pop and Visual Kei music, tea and cakes in the chill-out room, doll decorations, and other items designed to appeal to the Gothloli sense of European nostalgia.

Anime and Manga
Due to the popularity of this cute style with many fans of Japanese animation and comics, characters dressed in the "Gothloli" style may be found in numerous anime and manga. Some of the most prominent are Paradise Kiss, Le Portrait de Petit Cossette, Rozen Maiden, Tsukuyomi - Moon Phase, Othello, Chobits, xxxHOLiC, and Pitaten. Most of these titles appeal primarily to male fans rather than the gothlolis themselves. However, large numbers of gothloli girls are visible at manga events such as comiket. They often buy doujinshi based upon their favourite bands, dolls and movie characters; and some are interested in other kinds of cosplay apart from goth loli style.

Movies
The main character in Shimotsuma Monogatari (or Kamikaze Girls as it is known in the English language release) dressed in the "Gothloli" style.

The Confidence Cut

I'm still looking for the perfect term to describe this cut of suit. At first I'd termed it the flair cut, but it took only a moment to realise that that would imply that I was advocating a return to flared trousers and suits. Nothing could be further from the truth. Instead flair was meant to describe the extra, potentially overt, details it has; this is a cut of suit for a gent who can comfortably wear those extra little details that Joe Average generally lacks the confidence to wear out of fear of derision.

So for those of you who are looking for that extra something, both in their clothing and in their life, I proffer up the (potentially temporarily named) confidence cut. As with all fashionable men's suits for 2011 and 2012 it's cut that's about the male physique and the revival of classic suiting elements. Unlike the previous 'sleek cut' single breasted suit described, however, it features one additional key attribute: instead of a slim to medium notched lapel, 2011's confidence suit cut is all about peaked lapels. In this regard, the suit cut sits as something of a 1930s and 1970s revival - back then peaked lapels were the only kind worth having.

A single breasted suit with dual buttons and pointed lapels.

With its obvious appeal, the confidence cut can be more than just a single breasted suit cut, however. When it comes to on-trend double breasted suits, it's also the dominant cut.

The Sleek Cut - Donald Draper

The first of the two dominant single-breasted suit styles for 2011 is what I term a sleek cut. This is the suit for the slick chap who wears his suits in something of a toned down way. They're still impeccably made and they're never casual, but when it comes time to tick the masculinity box I referred to earlier, this suit is for the chap who does so with restraint.

To give you an instant mental picture of the sleek cut suit in 2011 and 2012, think of it as inspired by the continuing popularity of all things 1960s, a suit very akin to what the likes of Mad Men's Don Draper wears into the office though one cut with a trimmer waist.

If a sleek cut, single breasted suit is what you want to add to your wardrobe then you're after the following details:

  • slim to medium sized notched lapels or a shawl
  • the upper button should be positioned around your navel
  • a breast pocket that accommodates nothing more than a pocket square (as opposed to a elegantly folded pocket handkerchief) - contrast Don Draper's pocket square to the pocket handkerchief's featured in the Tom Ford pictures below if the difference is not immediately obvious to you

Fashion Ruffles in Austin

One would think that ruffles have no place in the modern home, either on a living room couch or in a bedroom closet. But, every now and then you need a touch of femininity to round out harsh lines and soften cold interiors. When we spotted a photo on that famous fashion website the Sartorialist, it reminded us of some interior details we saw in a local store in Austin.

So this women photographed in this Sartorialist photo is obviously stylish and stunning. Could we pull this look off? Maybe (probably not), but she sure is rocking it. That thick, fun texture is so soft and so bold and so girly—and it reminded us of the Ann Gish Seaflower pillows we spotted while visiting local Austin store Feather Your Nest.
The skirt (coat?) and the pillows aren’t the exact kind of ruffle, but stand as a good example of the range of ruffle options available out there. Wouldn’t it be fun to incorporate a little ruffleage (just made that word up) in a modern interior that only has sleek lines and a neutral palette?

Fashion Neon

Earlier in the week we assaulted your senses with a barrage of neon blue items for our weekly Blue Monday post. We mentioned bringing up the subject of neons because we’ve been spotting them everywhere. Lest you think we were just making that up to make our post seem sensical, we’ve gathered some of the evidence of what we are talking about in the world of fashion.
But you’ll also note that it’s not just the fashion world bringing these brighter-than-life hues back to popularity; interiors have been reviving them as well. Check out these neon-colored rooms and tell us if you’ll be incorporating neons in your spaces (or wardrobe) this season:

Puffy Fashion Design

We don’t profess to know a lot of about fashion, but one thing that eludes us every year is what sort of winter coat to buy. Depending on where you live in the world, this could even be a potentially life-threatening or life-saving decision, so there’s a lot riding on your choice of coat.

This year we’ve noticed a rise in the wearing of what we like to call the “puffy jacket.” Featuring a noticeable “puffiness” to said jacket, these usually are made of some slightly weather-resistant material, have cushion-y outlines due to stitching and are usually all one color. Both wearable for men and women, they have a casual and sporty look without making it seem like you’re about to hike the Adirondack.
Is there an interior design equivalent to the puffy jacket? We consider several suspects in the designs of the fabulous modern brand Fatboy and from the famous design brothers Bouroullec. Their designs manage to emulate the puffiness of puffy jackets without seeming traditional or tufted.

What do you think about the puffy trend, in interiors or in jackets? Do you spot a bit of this trend in or outside of your closet?

Color Bands Fashion Style

There’s something about the West. It’s such a magical place of colors, warmth and style: deserts, warm colors, lots of sunshine and yes, sometimes bold bands of hues that become striated color palettes. We’re not sure if this could be considered a full-blown interior or fashion trend yet, but when we came across a few of these interior and fashion items in the same week, we couldn’t help but draw parallels. We submit evidence for your approval:

These awesome striped thread necklaces found on Fashion Gone Rogue could bring some colored band style to any outfit. Awesome bonus? The blog Honestly…WTF made a sweet how-to post so you can make your own.

We first spotted this cool art project on Design For Mankind, and it was created by the artist Ginette Lapalme. We sort of wish we had a ton of them for our home, just laying around.

We just thought these colorful, striped pillows from World Market match the color band striped theme well.

The Worlds of Fashion and Interiors, Military Inspired

The worlds of fashion and interiors have always intertwined pretty intimately, both borrowing from one another and back again, until you hardly know who starts what trend. In our weekly fashion/interiors posts, we’ll talk about trends in both worlds that we see jumping into the next, and maybe even give you some head starts on how to incorporate the look into your own home!

Military-inspired clothes are making a big comeback this season on the runways and on the streets. We can hardly go anywhere without seeing someone in a chic olive-green jacket with big buttons. What’s so great about this trend is its focus on simplicity, functionality and utility—all great elements that blend seamlessly into a modern aesthetic. There’s no need to make your living room look like army barracks, but we’ve got some ideas that might bring a little military chic into your home:

Olive, of course There’s a particular shade of green that instantly stirs up images of army fatigues. Olive green is a fabulous color not just because it’s seen on many military uniforms, but because it’s soft enough to be a neutral in a space but also bold enough that home furnishings really pop. See some more olive room inspiration here and here.

The obvious Military-inspired items or actual military items bring an immediate air of authenticity. Go big with furniture items or take it easy with fun accessories like old ammunition boxes, maps and more. A few items we found perusing online:
Military Laundry Bags $7
Vintage Wool Military Blankets $48
Vintage Ammunition Storage Boxes $28
Antique Map $22
Official Military Whistle $12
Field Desk $299
Swiss Military Field Desk $110
The not-so-obvious Tough-looking home décor like industrial accessories can add a look of utility to a space and go hand in hand with a military theme. The best way to incorporate industrial? Lighting. Check out just a few we found on Circa Lighting’s website:

Large Country Industrial Pendant
